L-Lysine supplements for even the pickiest cats!

L-Lysine supplementation helps support normal respiratory health and helps maintain normal eye function and health. But we understand that getting cats to take a supplement can be challenging.

That’s why our clinic offers L-Lysine supplements in a variety of different formulations, including Enisyl-F® Chews, Lysine Bites, and Oral Paste as well as Viralys® Oral Gel and Oral Powder. These products help support your cat’s healthy immune system.

To learn more about L-Lysine supplements, please contact us today.

What is feline herpesvirus?

Feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1) is one of the most common causes of upper respiratory infection and eye problems in cats. FHV-1 is spread by close contact with an infected cat and by the exchange of bodily fluids—especially sneezing. Many cats become infected from their mothers when they are still kittens. Others are exposed to FHV-1 in multi-cat environments like shelters or catteries. In fact, up to 97% of cats show evidence of exposure to FHV-1 and, following recovery from primary infection, up to 80% of cats become carriers.1,2

Signs of FHV-1 infection may include:

  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Decreased appetite
  • Nasal discharge
  • Swelling and redness around the eye (conjunctivitis)
  • Discharge from the eye

Talk to us today about your cat’s risk for FHV-1 and ways to prevent and limit illness.

L-Lysine: Is your cat getting the right amount?

L-Lysine is a supplement that may help support respiratory and ocular (eye) health in cats. Many pet owners, however, may be giving their cat an amount that is too low to have the desired effects. There may be 2 reasons for this.

First, the recommended amount of L-Lysine used to be 500 mg once a day. More recent administration recommendations now call for 500 mg twice a day for adult cats. So, if you’re administering per the old way of thinking, your cat is only getting half of the recommended daily amount.

Second, some pet owners give their cats the full amount only when a problem is suspected. They may see the cat showing signs of respiratory distress or eye problems and only then administer the full amount. However, the best way to help cats defend against illness or outbreaks is to give them the full recommended amount every day.

Remember that animal medicine, much like human medicine, is a constantly changing field. Talk to us and make sure you’re up to date with current care recommendations for your cat!

An easy way to give cats an important supplement.

L-Lysine is a supplement that can support a healthy immune system in cats. Our clinic has found that one of the easiest ways to give cats this important supplement is by giving them a product called Enisyl-F® Chews.

Here’s why:

  • Convenient size—the chews are available in 500-mg amounts, which means your cat only needs 2 chews a day to meet the recommended daily amount
  • Yummy flavor—cats love the taste of the chews (this might be the most important feature of all, considering how finicky cats can be!)
  • Trusted product—ENISYL-F Chews are the newest addition to the first L-Lysine product portfolio developed for veterinary use. These products are a go-to choice for veterinarians and pet owners for over a decade.

Let us help you make consistent, daily administration of L-Lysine easy. Give us a call today!

Cost-effective ways to keep cats active.

We’ve all seen cats enjoy a lazy snooze in a warm spot or spend hours resting on our laps. But many cats also need physical activity to alleviate boredom, improve behavioral health, and maintain an appropriate weight.

It’s easy to create feline-friendly fun without breaking the bank. Here’s what you can do with common household items:

  • Homemade play structure – You don’t need to invest in an expensive climbing structure to help your cat play—cut holes in some cardboard boxes and stack them and watch your cat turn into Tarzan.
  • Food puzzle – Treat your cat to a delicious mystery—to provide hours of activity, hide treats in a box filled with cardboard tubes or under cut-away ping pong balls.
  • DIY cat toy – Creating cat entertainment is cheaper than you might think—buy a cat-friendly wand toy or tie a length of string to a pipe cleaner so your cat can enjoy hours of interactive fun!

If you’re worried about your cat’s activity level, then schedule a visit today. We can help your cat stay active and fit!

Important information about your cat’s L-Lysine supplement.

Our clinic has recommended the use of an L-Lysine supplement to support your cat’s healthy immune system. L-Lysine also helps support normal respiratory health and helps maintain normal eye function and health.

Administration recommendations have changed.

We want to make you aware of an important change regarding your cat’s L-Lysine amount. Recently, the recommended daily amount for L-Lysine in adult cats changed from 500 mg once a day to 500 mg twice a day. It is important to follow these updated recommendations to make sure your cat is receiving the full benefits of the L-Lysine supplement.

It’s easy to give your cat the right amount.

L-Lysine supplements come in a variety of formulations to meet the different needs of cats and their owners. Our clinic has found that one of the most convenient supplement forms is a chew called Enisyl-F®. This product comes in a 500-mg amount and in a flavor that cats love. One chew twice a day is all it takes to make sure your cat is getting the full recommended daily amount.

(We know that cats can be picky. But trust us when we say that cats really do like these chews!)

Consistency is key.

Supplements such as L-Lysine work best if you are giving them to your cat on a consistent, daily basis. Think about how you take human vitamins. You or your family members may take several daily vitamins to help keep your bodies strong and healthy—and you don’t wait to take vitamins until you’re feeling under the weather.

The same is true of supplements for your cat. Be proactive about your cat’s health.

Talk to us!

That’s why we’re here. We want to make sure you’re comfortable with these new recommendations. We can also make you aware of the different products available (including chews, bites, paste, powder, and gel) and discuss if your L-Lysine product is the most convenient way to ensure your cat is getting the correct amount.

For more information on L-Lysine supplements or to schedule your cat’s wellness visit, please contact us at [customize with clinic’s phone number, email, and/or website].

Feline herpesvirus is one of the most common infections in cats and kittens. Much like the human herpesvirus, the virus stays in the cat’s system for life, and there is no cure. But the good news is that even if your cat has been infected, there are ways to reduce the severity of flare-ups and limit the effects of the illness. Ask us today!
